Renting an apartment is an alternative to staying at a hotel when visiting new places.

Apartments offer privacy and independence and may be cheaper as having their own kitchen the visitor is able to buy products and cook instead of going to expensive restaurants.
Most of them are charged on a 'per apartment' basis and not 'per person' that make them suitable for groups.
